Free program Dism ++ for setting up and cleaning Windows

There are many relatively little-known among our users of free programs that allow you to conveniently configure Windows 10, 8.1 or Windows 7 and offer additional tools for working with the system. In this instruction about Dism ++ – one of such programs. Another utility that I recommend is Winaero Tweaker.

Dism ++ is designed as a graphical interface for the built-in Windows system utility dism.exe, which allows you to perform various actions related to backing up and restoring the system. However, this is not all the features available in the program.

Dism ++ Functions

The program features are divided into sections “Tools”, “Control Panel” and “Deployment”. For the reader of my site, the first two sections will be of most interest, each of which is divided into subsections.

Most of the presented actions can be performed manually (the links in the description are just for such methods), but sometimes this can be done with the help of a utility, where everything is collected and works automatically much more conveniently.

In the “Tools” section there are the following features:

Cleanup – allows you to clean up system folders and Windows files, including reducing the WinSxS folder, removing old drivers and temporary files. To find out how much space you can free, check the items you want and click “Analyze.”

Download management – here you can enable or disable startup items from different system locations, as well as configure the services startup mode. In this case, you can separately view the system and user services (disabling the latter is usually safe).

Manage Appx – here you can uninstall Windows 10 applications, including built-in ones (on the “Preinstalled Appx” tab).

Additionally – perhaps one of the most interesting sections with the ability to create Windows backups and recovery, allowing you to restore the bootloader, reset the system password, convert ESD to ISO, create a Windows To Go flash drive, edit the hosts file and more.

It should be noted that to work with the last partition, especially with the functions of restoring the system from the backup, it is better to run the program in the Windows recovery environment (see the end of the instruction), while the utility itself should not be on a disk that is being restored either from a bootable flash drive or drive (you can simply place the folder with the program on the bootable USB flash drive with Windows, boot from this flash drive, press Shift + F10 and enter the path to the program on the USB drive).

Control Panel

This section contains subsections:

Optimization – settings of Windows 10, 8.1 and Windows 7, some of which without programs can be configured in the “Parameters” and “Control Panel”, and for some – use the registry editor or local group policy. Among the interesting things are: removal of context menu items, disabling the automatic installation of updates, deleting items from the Explorer quick access panel, disabling SmartScreen, disabling Windows Defender, disabling the firewall, and others.

Drivers – a list of drivers with the ability to get information about its location, version and size, remove drivers.

Applications and features – analogue of the same section of the Windows Control Panel with the ability to remove programs, view their sizes, enable or disable Windows components.

Features – a list of additional system features of Windows that can be removed or installed (for installation, check the “Show all” option).

Updates – a list of available updates (on the “Windows Update” tab, after analysis) with the ability to get the URL for updates, and installed packages on the “Installed” tab with the ability to remove updates.

Additional features Dism ++

Some additional useful program options can be found in the main menu:

“Repair – check” and “Repair – fix” perform the check or repair of the Windows system components, in the same way as it is done using Dism.exe and described in the Check Windows system files integrity instructions.

“Recovery – Starting in the Windows recovery environment” – restarting the computer and running Dism ++ in the recovery environment when the OS is not running.

Options – Settings. Here you can add Dism ++ to the menu when you turn on the computer. It may be useful for quick access to the recovery boot loader or system from an image when Windows does not start.
